Flammulated Owls are small, mostly insectivorous cavity-nesting owls found throughout Utah. They will also use nestboxes and the longest known nestbox study of this species is in the Wasatch-Cache range of northern Utah where over 100 nestboxes have been installed for these and other tiny owls.
HWI staff and volunteers will help clean and repair as many nestboxes in this project area as time allows. Join us for a fun day of hiking in the mountains and helping conservation. While we are unlikely to see Flammulated Owls in the boxes this early in the season, finding red squirrels, flying squirrels, or Northern Saw-whet Owls is not uncommon. We will meet at the HWI Office (2240 South 900 East, SLC 84106) at 9am and caravan/carpool up together. Email Dave if you would like to go but prefer meet at the Snowbasin trailhead. (Participants in the clean-up field trips will have priority to any nest check/banding trips later in the summer!)
Free, but registration is requested.
