In a music critic survey in 1999, "the 100 Greatest Singers of the 20th Century" were determined and published in Classic CD Magazine (London). Among the names selected for the list were Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo and Maria Callas. But the number one spot was given to the Great Swedish Tenor, Jussi Bjorling. The Jussi Bjorling Society – USA is one of 3 groups (plus UK and Scandinavia) whose charter is to champion and sustain the name and artistry of Jussi Bjorling and the art of singing. Noted authors, historians, vocal scientists and musicologists will present unique research. A special free session (Friday morning, June 12th) for the general public with required ticket (obtainable on the website) will include "Richard Tucker: The American Caruso" given by Tucker's biographer (James A. Drake) and son, David Tucker. Others presenting include Andrew Farkas (Bjorling's biographer), Stephen Hastings ("Opera News" correspondent from Italy and author of The Bjorling Sound) and Harald Henrysson, founding curator of the Bjorling Museum in Borlange, Sweden. The event closes with a public recital Saturday, June 13th at 7:30pm in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square.
Friday morning (June 12) is free to the public, with required free ticket obtained on website.
