Brian Johnson: My Life As an Artist

I have been evolving as an artist since age five. At my mother’s request, I selected a rainbow of crayons to color a black-and-white print of an Easter bunny for a local contest. I believe Mom wanted to keep me busy and out of her hair. I won that contest, and my artistic journey began.

I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to explore my creativity and enrolled me in art classes at an early age: my first pastel class was at the age of seven. Art was the one thing that made my school years bearable.  After graduating from high school, I headed to Southern Utah University to study fine art. Lack of funds interrupted my studies, and I entered the world of the working class. When the store I had been working for closed I went back to study graphic arts and with that training I began a successful career working in package design, illustration, and video games.

As I near retirement I have been reconnecting with my roots as a fine artist. It’s a love / hate journey filled with great joy and utter defeat. Yet my greatest joy in life is using my creativity to bring to life the kaleidoscope of ideas running through my head.

I hope my paintings will bring you insight into me as an artist and as one who is compelled to share visual tales through imagery.
