Through the personal lens of filmmaker J.R. Hardman, Reenactress investigates the gender-bending women and transmen of American Civil War reenactment who crossdress to portray soldiers on the battlefield. These present-day reenactors commemorate historical women who lived secretly as men to fight in the Civil War for both the Confederacy and the Union.
