John O’Connell was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1995. He pursued further studies at the University of Connecticut, receiving an MFA in 1999. He taught at Middle Tennessee State University until 2002. Currently, he is Chair of Painting and Drawing at the University of Utah in the Art and Art History Department. O’Connell’s work has been exhibited at numerous venues in the United States, including the Brooks Museum in Memphis, Rosenbaum Contemporary Gallery in Miami, and the Lowe Gallery in Santa Monica. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts includes O’Connel’s work in its permanent collection.
