Gary Ernest Smith was raised on a ranch in Oregon before converting to the Mormon faith in 1966. He trained at Brigham Young University, earning a BFA and MFA. Smith is a well-known and very successful Utah painter and has taught at his alma mater. Smith’s paintings of religious and rural subjects, are somewhat enigmatic with suggestions of abstraction.
