Butcher, originally from Ogden, Utah was a timekeeper and clerk for the Southern Pacific railroad during the 1920’s, but early in the Depression decade he decided on a career as an interior designer. Then in 1939, having become interested in painting landscapes while creating sets for the Ogden Theatre Guild, he began a serious course of study under the noted local artist, Howell Rosenbaum. From 1939-40 on, Butcher was an active exhibitor whose works on canvas drew positive critical comment during the mid-century period.
