Raised in Salt Lake City, Robert Lorenzo Shepherd studied at the University of Utah and the University of California at Berkley. He worked as a decorator in California for many years before retiring in 1972 and moving back to the west, settling in Santa Clara, Utah. Upon his retirement, Shepherd turned his focus to painting realistic western subjects.
