David Howell Rosenbaum was a native of Brigham City, Utah. In the early 1930s he briefly attended Utah State College in Logan, and at the end of the decade studied at the American Artists’ School in New York under Moses Soyer and others. He was employed by the Works Progress Administration to teach at the Utah Art Center in Salt Lake City, and many of his paintings were acquired and distributed to public collections by the WPA. He served in World War II with a construction battalion on Guadalcanal. A painter, primarily of boldly colored, imaginative landscapes and rural subjects, Rosenbaum is generally considered to have done his best work in the late 1930s and early 40s, and he produced very little after his return from the war.
