Ada Chamberlin Irvine was born in 1910 and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. A printmaker known for her serigraphs, she graduated from the University of Utah in 1933 where she studied art and dance. While in college, her eye for subtle shapes enabled her to work cutting freehand black paper silhouette portraits of department store customers. Irvine captured the human form, particularly children, using pastels, watercolors, oils and clay sculpture. Her continuing education in contemporary design and color theory at the University of Utah drew her interest to the interaction of adjacent colors and forms, and her work became progressively more abstract variations of bright, clear colors.
