Best known for her paintings of friends and others which often bordered on the surreal, Ruth Wolfe Smith pursued early training at Fresno State College, and from 1931 to 1934 she studied in Utah with Edwin Evans, Frank Ward Kent, and Caroline Parry. She and her husband Paul, in partnership with fellow painter William Parkinson, painted many decorative landscapes and still lifes, and designed and produced remarkable decorated furniture for the trade and for private clients in the Salt Lake area from the 1940s to the 1970s.
