Salt Lake native Sidney Paul Smith studied art in Utah with Lawrence Squires (his uncle) and A. B. Wright, and in New York under Leon Kroll at the Art Students League. Smith painted extensively under the Works Progress Administration. He taught at the Salt Lake Art Center from 1936 to 1941, and afterwards worked as a freelance artist, designer and furniture decorator, in partnership with two other noted Utah artists: his wife, Ruth Wolf Smith, and William Parkinson.
