Jeanne Clarke was born in Alpena, Michigan. Clarke began her artistic training in Chicago, Illinois, where she studied simultaneously at the University of Chicago and at the Chicago Art Institute. She moved to Connecticut and continued her artistic training at the Silvermine Guild and at Yale University. Later, in Utah, she attended Brigham Young University, where in five years she earned both her BFA and MFA degrees. After graduating, Clarke taught drawing and painting at BYU.
