Utah native Frank Anthony Smith studied at the Art Students League and at the University of Utah, where he earned a BFA degree in 1962 and an MFA in 1964. He began teaching at the University of Utah in 1966 after a stint at Wayne State University in Detroit. Smith is one of a small number of Utah contemporary artists to receive national attention, and is one of the most highly regarded modernists in the state today. He has been the subject of three important solo exhibitions during the last two decades: at the Salt Lake Art Center in 1981, in 1988 at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1996 at the Salt Lake Art Center. His paintings and work in other media are part of the collections of most art museums in Utah, as well as the National Gallery, Washington, D.C. and the Denver Art Museum.
