Salt Lake City native Hal Rumel attended the University of Utah to study painting for a time but eventually turned his attention to photography. He established a studio at Ruby’s Inn in Bryce Canyon and often washed prints in the surrounding canyon streams. He left the University to study photography at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and went on to become one of Utah’s best-known scenic and commercial photographers.
