Surface Tension is a 22′ tall by 16′ wide installation in the lobby of the USU Life Sciences Building. It is comprised of steel framing, aluminum cladding and 534 unique cast and laminated glass “drops. The work deploys cast glass to evoke the materiality of water… water, because there is no biological system that’s not wholly dependent on it and it is therefore crucial to the study of life sciences. The glass mimics water in three ways: structure – water drop sizes and shapes were analyzed and used as the basis for casting; effect – glass chill marks and light refraction create watery light; image – images of life developed with College faculty can be found by intrepid observers in some of the drops.
