Hal Douglas Himes was born in Park City, Utah, and grew up in Southern California. After living in Europe for several years, he returned to Utah to study painting and printmaking. He received a MFA from Brigham Young University in 1986, and went on to teach printmaking and drawing there. He was also a member of the Print Studies Workshop at BYU until 1994, when he left teaching so that he could devote his time to painting and lithography.
