Born in Logan, Utah, Geraldine H. Clayton received her MFA from the University of Utah in 1982. She also studied at Cambridge University, the Nicolai Fechin Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and in Utah with Bonnie Posselli and Michael Workman. Clayton is also an accomplished landscape designer and art historian. In 1984, she completed a study of the Utah State Capitol architectural competition of 1911-12.
