Before returning to southern California, Johnston was for many years a member of the University of Utah art faculty. A California native, Johnston earned degrees from California State at Long Beach (BFA) and Cranbrook Academy in Michigan (MFA) before coming to Utah to teach sculpture and large and small metals classes. He also served as director of the Salt Lake Art Center in the 1980s.
