Untitled (Seascape)

Henry Lavender Adolphus Culmer was born in England, and worked for a London printer as a youth. He emigrated to the U.S. at 14. In Utah, he attended the University of Utah, and later studied with Utah painters Alfred Lambourne and Reuben Kirkham. Largely self-taught, Culmer traveled to see the paintings of the great American landscape artists of the day, and was much influenced by the work of Bierstadt, Hill, Church, and Thomas Moran, whom he met in Utah.
