Kahealani Ohumukini Blackmon

We are Halau Ku Pono I Kamalani.  I am Kumu hula Kahealani Ohumukini Blackmon. I found my way to a stage at the young age of 18 months old and never wanted to leave the lights and the music. My Kumu Hula (teacher), Keola Ohumukini had me teaching keiki at the age of 11. I knew from a young age I wanted to perpetuate and share the knowledge of my Native Hawaiian culture. 

I was privileged to learn from Uncle George Naope, Uncle Ray Fonseca, Auntie Mae Lobenstein, Auntie Lovey Apana, and Auntie Edith McKenzie. 

My Kumu Hula Maurice Keola Ohumukini was uniki by Uncle George Naope and Auntie Nona Beamer. I am continuing the legacy of my Kumu Hula by continuing the perpetuation of the culture and sharing what has been passed to me. 

I have been a guest teacher for SLCC, U of U Dance Department, and Boise State. I have taught at Charter schools in Utah, homeschool programs, and have taught workshops through out the nation. Workshops have also been held through Utah Division of Arts and Museums. The halau holds annual hula and craft workshops.

In 2008, Halau Ku Pono I Kamalani began teaching hula and other Pacific Island cultures in Davis County, UT. Our group has children from age 4 to adult. We have performed throughout Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and competed in several hula competitions in the United States. We believe in perpetuating the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultures through sharing knowledge. We accomplish doing so through the dances we perform. We want the world to see the cultures through our eyes.
