Salt Lake City Arts Council is seeking grant applications for temporary public art projects addressing the shrinking of the Great Salt Lake. These works will be presented as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant Salt Lake City received in October 2023.

The Salt Lake City Arts Council’s project, “Wake the Great Salt Lake,” aims to address the shrinking of the Great Salt Lake caused by humans and climate change by curating and installing several temporary public artworks by diverse local, regional, and internationally recognized artists that speak to this environmental crisis.

"Art is essential in the regional effort to preserve the Great Salt Lake," said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. "The works produced for ‘Wake the Great Salt Lake’ will illuminate the crisis, imagine our possible futures, and inspire action in ways that data and policy simply cannot. I'm excited to see what new works our community's artists, performers, writers, and other creatives have to contribute to the conversation."

The grant funding will be awarded to seven to twelve temporary public art projects originating in all seven Salt Lake City Council Districts. The program is available to individual artists, creative residents, or organizations with a local impact in Salt Lake City. Individuals may apply for a grant of up to $10,000 and organizations may receive up to $50,000.

Applicants can find the full guidelines at https://saltlakearts.org/grants. Submissions are currently being accepted through Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.
