This year, Chinese New Year’s Day falls on Saturday, January 25, 2020, marking the beginning of the Year of the Rat. The event is celebrated in many East and Southeast Asian countries and is especially important for Chinese people all around the world. Every year in Salt Lake City, we too celebrate Chinese New Year or Spring Festival in time for Lunar New Year’s Day.
Since 2002, the Utah Chinese New Year Celebration Committee (UTCNYCC) has united nearly 20 participating community organizations to present this great tradition to all the people of the Salt Lake metro area. This free event features local performers from Utah as well as guest artists from as far away as Asia.
This year, the Utah Chinese New Year Cultural Celebration Performances (Utah Chunwan) will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Skyline High School (3261 E 3760 S, Salt Lake City, UT84109). The program will include both traditional and modern music and dances, Chinese folk songs, Peking opera, a magic show, and much, much more. The show kicks off with an exciting Lion Dance – fun for everyone, young or old!
This event is sponsored by the Salt Lake County ZAP program, the Confucius Institute at the University of Utah, Coinfinesse Group, and many local organizations and friends from inside and outside the Chinese community.
The celebration is open to the public, and once again, admission is free. So, it is time for all of us to come together and enjoy this great, valued tradition. Please come to gain a greater understanding of the holiday and to share this happy time. The organizing committee invites everyone to experience this annual cultural phenomenon.
