ARTIST STATEMENT:

“The essence of my vision stems from the depths of spirituality-particularly the relation between humans, animals and primal energies. The connections between human beings and nature is inseparable. This belief is reflected in the content of my work.

In 1971, I was transformed through a two-year living and working relationship with the Swinomish Tribe in Washington State. Welcomed into the inner-tribal circles and attending many sacred spiritual ceremonies, I developed a deep understanding of the Indians’ relationship with the environment and wildlife. Since then, my work has mirrored Native American spiritual-world values.

Much of my artwork is relative to shamanism-being one of the intermediaries between ordinary and non-ordinary states of reality, a seer and a healer. Through my art, I open the shadow, the dark side of my persona to find universal truths…”

ARTIST BIO:

Daniel Owen Stolpe was born in Los Angeles, California in 1939. He obtained an Associated of Arts degree at Pasadena City College in 1960. He attended Los Angeles County Art Institute (OTIS) on a scholarship from 1961-1962. Later Stolpe apprenticed under artist Don La Viere Turner, in Glendora; and from 1965 to 1966, with Master Printer Joseph Funk, in Venice, both studios located in California. Stolpe works in the tradition of European figurative style, heavily influenced by German Expressionism to create interpretations of mythical themes. He is represented in over 25 major collections, both nationally and internationally, including Fogg Art Museum, Grunwald Collection (UCLA), H.R.C. University of Texas, Portland Art Museum and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. He has held over 50 solo exhibits over three continents. Born in 1939, died in 2018.
