Brother Be Gone

Brother Be Gone, a solo exhibition by John Sproul is a reflection on the human experience of loss and grief. Through a series of recent paintings created after the passing of a long-time friend, Sproul explores loss as a powerful experience that is

“This work comes out of a great loss that I suffered, endured, and continue to endure of my closest friend, Dave Allan, who I have known for more than 30 years.  Dave was diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma cancer 2 1/2 years ago and died a few months later at the age of 51.  This work began shortly after that as I needed to “talk” through the grief that was in me.  As time went on the work moved from this specific loss to include all experiences with loss. The Alice Gallery is open for viewing by appointment only. Appointments must be made 24 hrs in advance.

Each appointment is for one group, consisting of 1-3 people (an individual can reserve the space for themselves, or bring up to two other people with them.)

Prior to your appointment at the Alice Gallery, please check yourself and everyone in your group for Covid-19 symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, etc. If you are exhibiting any of these symptoms or others, please do not come to the gallery. Similarly, if you have had close & prolonged contact (closer than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) with anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 14 days, please do not come to the gallery. You may reschedule your appointment for a later date, or cancel your appointment.

For both your safety and for our staff, visitors are encouraged to wear a mask while visiting the gallery and to social distance from staff when possible (6ft distance between individuals).

Staff at the Utah Division of Arts & Museums are committed to the health and safety of our community. Staff will wear masks at all times while visitors are in the gallery, and will check themselves for symptoms before entering the gallery.
