Disability Day of Mourning Virtual Candlelight Vigil

Neurodiverse UT is hosting an annual virtual vigil to remember people with disabilities who were killed by their relatives or caretakers.

The Disability Day of Mourning or #DDoM2021 occurs every year on March 1st to remember the lives of disabled people lost to filicide. Filicide is when a disabled person is murdered by their relatives or caretakers regardless of intent. Media and society often view victims of filicide as burdens, that their deaths are inevitable. Their killers are often given sympathy & lenient sentences while the victims are blamed for their own murder.

The Disability Day of Mourning is a chance to remember and tell the stories of those who were killed at the hands of their most trusted relationships. Last year our neighboring state of Idaho experienced a tragic and prominent case of filicide. JJ Vallow, along with the lives of too many others will be remembered this year.
