Join us for the September Salt Lake Gallery stroll as we present “Nosey Taily and the Leftovers,” an exhibition featuring nearly 30 new sculptures by local artist and curator Jared Steffensen.
Steffensen’s sculptures are created without predetermined outcomes in mind. Inspired by the experience of skateboarding, he attempts to give the idea of “play” a physical form by repurposing skateboard decks into dynamic artworks. Each piece is an intuitive response to material, shape, and movement.
Working with the materials over time, Steffensen developed a loose system based on patterns that emerged in the shapes and lines of the deconstructed boards. Some are curved, some straight, and some are a mix of both, which informs how the sculptures are built. Curved pieces become part of the “Nosey Taily” series, and straighter pieces become the “Leftovers.” The resulting artworks are explorations of the interplay between light and shadow, as well as object and architecture.
Born in Fairfax, VA, Steffensen currently resides in Salt Lake City and serves as curator of exhibitions at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and in Mexico, Germany, and the Netherlands.
We look forward to sharing this work with you during gallery stroll on the 15th and by appointment through September 22. Follow @currentwork.art on Instagram to see images of work and updates, including special public gallery hours.
