MACHINAL

A young woman feels helpless against the demands of society, relationships, and life. In the end, she is faced with a deadly decision and must deal with the consequences. Set against the realities of our technologically mediated lives, Machinal is a cautionary tale about the importance of true connection. A contemporary adaptation of Sophie Treadwell’s early 20th-century impressionist masterpiece, this play follows a young woman who adheres to the rituals that society expects of a woman, however resistant she may feel about them. The production examines her life through an obligatory marriage, the complexities of motherhood, and the danger of an affair.
