Sad Irons, Flat Irons, History of Ironing

How do you treat unsightly wrinkles in your clothes?  A spin in the dryer with a bit of ice?  A quick water spritz and hand smoothing?  A pass with a portable steamer?  Is your last choice the old ironing board and electric iron?

Remember that a couple of those options are relatively new conveniences.  Yet, wanting clothes to look cared-for and wrinkle-free has been true almost as long as people have woven material.  What did those intrepid pioneers do?  They used tubs of water, strong homemade soap, and hung things to dry.  How did they iron them?

The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers McQuarrie Memorial Museum has some interesting answers on January 21.  Dixie Diane Miller will share her knowledge of the different types of irons they used.  If you have an heirloom iron, you are encouraged to bring it to add to the discussion.
