In the mid-1970s Peregrine Falcon populations had been reduced by 80-90%. These falcons were on the brink of extinction due to the accumulation of the pesticide DDT in their systems.
But in August 1999, populations had increased enough for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the Peregrine Falcon from the list of endangered and threatened species. This August marks the 20 year anniversary of this success. But how did these falcons recover?
