The University of Utah's Department of Art & Art History

We believe in the power of art and its capacity for connection, collaboration, and engagement in the pursuit of excellence in education, scholarship, and creative research. The Department’s overall mission is to provide education, training, and mentoring in the disciplines of art, design, art teaching, and art history to empower students to discover a meaningful life and a successful career in the arts.

The Department of Art & Art History offers a BFA degree in Art with the following emphasis areas: Ceramics, Illustration, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Digital Imaging, Printmaking, Sculpture Intermedia, Book Arts (pending), and a certificate/minor in arts technology. Stand-alone degrees include a BFA in Graphic Design, a BFA in Art Teaching, and a BA in Art History.

The Department honors and develops the natural talents of our students and gives them the tools to look critically at the world and express their views visually, verbally, and in writing. Everyone is given opportunities to grow and develop as artists, scholars, educators and designers. To successfully guide our students, we hold our faculty to a level of excellence in scholarly and creative research, teaching, and service, as well as, afford them avenues for professional growth. The Department strives to be a full participant and leader in the mission and goals of Utah’s flagship university.
