This presentation, offered by Lee Witten, describes the history of the restoration effort by the Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, for the D&RGW 223 locomotive. Images will show the locomotive as it was when in service, at the point of its donation to Salt Lake City, during its movement to Ogden and work done through to present day.
Lee Witten was born in Ogden in 1941. His father was a Union Pacific Conductor from 1938 to 1974. He is a former biology teacher based in Hawaii until retirement in 1997 when he returned to Ogden. Currently, Witten serves as The Union Station’s volunteer archivist as well as the secretary of the Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, where he has become involved in the restoration of the 223 locomotive.
