On April 5th at the DSU Cox Auditorium, the St. George Dance Company, a professional modern dance group in southern Utah will present innovative contemporary dance that connects with and inspires the soul. St. George Dance Company was founded and is directed by Summer Belnap Robertson. Robertson’s upbeat, buoyant choreography has been described as Broadway meets comedic Del Arte.
The program will begin with a preshow by Pine View High School and Desert Hills High School dance companies. Then, highlights from Summer Robertson’s choreography will be presented. One of the most far out and crazy pieces, Dirty Romance, features a happy-go-lucky janitor who is seduced by a garbage monster. The garbage monster kidnaps him and takes him into her garbage can. Other works feature Toestada, a crafty dance where only dancers’ hands and feet are revealed under the drapes of the stage proscenium and Kudzu, a climbing, coiling vine native to southern Japan, that chokes the life out of trees and other vegetation.
Pianist Paul Nickels will perform Fantasy in D Minor, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as dancers perform.
Dancers performing are Camille Bahoravitch, Michelle Brown, Branton Burgess, Katherine Call, Cassidee Edmunds, Jared Fluerant, Bethany Gee, Jennie Grimes, Jennie Jones, Denise Purvis, Katrina Swift, Micadyn Sanders, Fred Tucker, Rebekah Wainright and J. Daniel Woodstock.
The performance will take place Saturday, April 5 at 2pm and 7:30pm at the Cox Performing Arts Center in St. George, Utah. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for groups, students and seniors.
