Bruce Hixon Smith studied with Alvin Gittins and Doug Snow at the University of Utah and at the Art Students League in New York. Smith taught at Brigham Young University from 1978 until his retirement in 2006. He is credited with developing the work of younger artists such as Brian Kershisnik, Peter Everett, and Sarah Richards Samuelson, and was awarded the prestigious Utah Governor’s Mansion Artist Award in Visual Arts in 2016. Smith lives in Springville where he continues a rigorous studio practice.
