Fred Eugene Wright was born in San Francisco in 1939. Before becoming a photographer in 1975, Wright worked as a bank manager, mountain guide, ski instructor, carpenter and paralegal. In his younger years, he was hired as a private investigator in Hollywood for Howard Hughes. Primarily self-taught as a photographer, Wright taught at the Salt Lake Art Center and was a professor at the University of Utah. He is a pilot and often takes photographs while flying.
