Fall Exhibitions
September 11-October 16, 2009
Add Review/CommentThrough October 16, the Springville Museum of Art will host a variety of exhibitions: Hudson River Revival: Contemporary Landscape Painting, UVU Art Faculty Show, Pastels by Anne Weber, Open Secret: Undisclosed Works by Kent Wing and Alex Bigney, and the Bridge Academy of Art: One-Year Concour. Hudson River Revival: Contemporary Landscape Painting, is the first exhibition of a group of artists that are breathing new life into the old traditions of the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School was one of the first movements in American painting. The artists of the movement, including Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, painted landscapes of the American northeast after many months and even years of study. Today the artists, led by Jacob Collins of New York, are creating works of art using the same methods, materials, and locations as the 19th century Hudson River artists. The revival will feature artists who hale from Spain, Italy, London, and New York. Ryan Brown a local Utah artist, worked on his painting Kaaterskill Clove for over three years. He spent two and a half months studying on location in the Hudson River area and then used his sketches and studies in studio to create his final landscape painting. This will be the first exhibition of the artists Hudson River type paintings. The UVU Art Faculty Show, also opening at the Springville Museum of Art will feature works by professors and faculty of the Utah Valley University Arts and Visual Communications Department. The idea behind the show, states Lee Cowan a professor of visual arts at UVU, is to let students view their professors work early in the year, to aid their decisions in choosing an emphasis in the major. The faculty show was originally held in the spring but Professor Cowan urged the department to move the show to the fall, ensuring that more students will have the opportunity to see the artwork. This exhibition will highlight works in a wide variety of media painting, sculpture, works on paper and even textiles. Pastels by Anne Weber, will feature 22 pastel works by Utah artist Anne Weber. Of interest to Utahans specifically are her bold landscapes of the American West which compromise a majority of the show. A few of Webers genre scenes featuring people, including one of the Provo Farmers Market, will also be on display. The themes of night and day and changes in the weather are important to the artists work, therefore Webers pastels focus on vivid colors and the contrast of light and shade. Another exhibition, Open Secret is more than just an art exhibit. Its also a riddle. It consists of undisclosed works by Alex Bigney and Kent Wing, open from September 11 through October 16, 2009 at the Springville Museum of Art. The paintings ask the viewer to look again, do a re-take, a double-take. As described by Frank McEntire, former Director of the Utah Arts Council and Art Critic for the Salt Lake Tribune, this look again exercise is somewhat prurient in nature, like eavesdropping. It is what we all do to hone in on a secret, to discover hidden knowledge, to probe a mystery. It is the voyeur instinct, that curious desire to become aware of, even expose another's secret without revealing our own. Yet, in the process, our personal character is shown back to us in the scryers mirror. It is the mystery not withheld, or at least the idea of it, that connects the works of these two artists, each a devotional explorer of the numinous, with a passion for craftsmanship, and an unbridled proclivity towards the ironic. They are generous in the dissemination of conundrums, have a genuine love of audience, joyfully provide an aperture into the world of symbols, and are unashamed appropriators of history and culture.
