Alan Michael, a native New Yorker, went to and graduated from the Berklee school of music in Boston. Upon graduation, he moved back to NYC with a group of musicians he had worked regularly with in Boston, Gene Ashton and David S. Ware. The three of them started a performance space located at, and called, 501 Canal St. During the 1970’s this space became an integral part of the downtown NYC new music loft scene. During this time, Alan recorded and performed with greats such as Cecil McBee, Jimmy Hopps, Gunter Hampel, Jeanne Lee, as well as continuing to work with Ashton and Ware. This led to spending three years touring and recording with the Carla Bley Band, as well as with the rock bands Psychedelic Furs and Our Daughter’s Wedding. Alan moved to Salt Lake City in the mid-90’s and has been working here locally. He recently formed the Alan Michael band featuring his own compositions as well as some of his favorite tunes from artists as diverse as Jefferson Airplane, Pharoah Sanders, Carla Bley and Psychedelic Furs.
