Author Colm Toibin Speaks on Irish National Identity

What does it mean to be Irish 100 years after the declaration of an Independent Ireland?  The men and women of the Easter Rising 1916 self-consciously created an Irish identity from once suppressed ideas, arts and language.  Reflections on national identity are again taking center stage during Ireland’s centenial commemorations this year. Among the most popular Irish writers today, Toibin, whose grandfather participated in the 1916 Rebellion, will bring perspective from his decades as novelist, critic and thinker during this 7 p.m. talk. 

Toibin also will participate in a Q&A following a noon screening at the Wildcat Theater of the film Brooklyn based on his novel of the same title. Premiered at Sundance in 2015, Brooklyn is currently nominated for three Academy Awards.
