Steve Lyman is a drummer, composer, bandleader, author, and educator. As a performer, Lyman has enjoyed sharing the stage with some of theworld’s finest musicians including: Aaron Parks, Nir Felder, Gilad Hekselman, Julian Pollack, Chase Baird, José James, Ben van Gelder,Ben Street, Bill McHenry, George Garzone, Christopher Tordini, Ralph Alessi, Logan Richardson, Jaleel Shaw, Thomas Morgan, Joe Martin, DanTepfer, and Corey Christiansen to name a few.
In the United States Lyman has performed at the Blue Note, and Smalls Jazz Club as a sideman, and as a leader; In Europe, Lyman hastoured with some of the above-mentioned musicians at the BBC Studios London, Blue Note Milan, New Morning Paris, as well as many other venues throughout Spain, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands, France,
South America, and the UK.
Lyman’s first major break was with the José James Quartet, with whom he was an active member from 2006-2008. During that time, Lyman performed on Mr. James’s critically acclaimed album The Dreamer, which was voted #21 of the top 50 albums in 2008 (JazzTimes Magazine) and toured extensively throughout Europe.
Lyman’s debut record Revolver features Julian Pollack on piano, Kenji Aihara on guitar, Christopher Tordini on bass, and Lyman on drums & compositions received 5/5 stars in All About Jazz Magazine. Additionally, Lyman is the author of a drumset method book called “A New Approach to Odd Times for Drumset” published by Mel Bay Publications in
2013.
As an educator, Lyman has taught master classes at Utah State
University, Brigham Young University, and The University of New Mexico at Santa Fe. In 2007 Lyman co-led a drumset master class alongside jazz drummer Billy Hart at Montclair State University, NJ, as well as taught combos at the University of Utah from 2010-2012. Currently, Lyman lives in Salt Lake City, UT where he is an active performer and educator. Steve Lyman holds degrees from the New School University in New York City and the University of Utah.
