Kelly L. Holtman

Lab Dogs

Musician

The Lab Dogs bluegrass band has brought smiles to audiences all over Utah since starting out in 1999. The Dogs have played at music festivals, private parties, conventions, farmers markets, wedding receptions, corporate events and fundraisers, but no funerals (yet). We have played dozens of free shows for appreciative audiences at nursing homes and care centers. The Lab Dogs play everything from traditional bluegrass to the blues, from old-time standards to swingy newgrass originals, and we have a fantastic time doing it. No one has ever left a Lab Dogs concert with a frown on their face, and that includes the Lab Dogs themselves. We love performing and playing music, but most of all we love entertaining and interacting with our audiences. The Lab Dogs are Kevin Jones (mandolin), Erik Brunvand (bass), Peter Netka (resophonic guitar), Bill Thomas (guitar), and J.D. Frederick (banjo).

Mary Frances Lambert

I am a jewelry artist and educator living in Salt Lake City. My first metals experience was in 1995. I’ve learned from and with many jewelry artists, and in 2015 started teaching metalsmithing. I emphatically love teaching, knowing that I am providing the same education and belonging that meant so much to me when I began making jewelry. I plot my own work to enhance the diverse skills I need to be the best teacher possible. I also take custom jewelry orders, and have expanded into working with gold, fine gemstones, and intricate pieces. I’m a docent at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and continually research the jewelry on display and painted in the museum’s collection. I’ve made several art-inspired pieces, which I use to connect tour patrons to the wide history of personal adornment. In 2018 I saw my work accepted to the Utah Statewide Annual Competition.

Liz Lambson

Musician; Singer; Visual Artist; Writer

Liz Lambson is an artist, musician, writer, and mother to five boys. Liz performs as a string bassist with the Ballet West Orchestra as well as the children’s singer-songwriter Lizzy Luna, the creator of the music-and-movement program Yoga Storytime & Songs. She released her first album of original children’s yoga music, Reach to the Sky, in 2018. Her writing has been featured in publications including the New Era and the New York Times. As an active member of Utah’s arts and culture community, Liz is a member of the Utah Black Artists Collective and serves on the board of the up-and-coming Utah Black History Museum (UBHM). Her artwork is featured on Salt Lake City’s Black Lives Matter mural at City Hall and the exterior of the mobile Utah Black History Museum bus, a traveling exhibit sponsored by Black Lives Matter Utah. After living in Colorado, California, Oregon, New York, and Missouri, Liz settled in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2017. In her spare time she enjoys needlework, gardening, road trips, and Scrabble.

Jason Lanegan

Born and raised in Washington State, Jason Lanegan was involved in drawing and other creative outlets from his earliest memories. With eyes set upon being a high school art teacher, Jason first attended BYU-Idaho where he obtained an associate degree in the visual arts. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in sculpture from Northern Arizona University and then a bachelor’s in art education from Eastern Washington University. After turning down a long sought after offer for a high school teaching position, Jason went on to acquire a graduate degree in sculpture with minor in art history from BYU. Upon completing his education he used his experience in various capacities including, head sculptor for Paleoforms, director of the Morris Fine Art Gallery, and sculpture professor as well as museum director at Northern Arizona University. Jason currently lives with his wife, Kimberly, and five children in Spanish Fork, Utah and works as the Gallery Director for the Departments of Art and Design at BYU.

Tatiana Larsen

Tatiana Svrckova Larsen was born in Cadca, Slovakia. She has attended Josef Vydra’s School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and University of Matej Bel in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. In 2010 she received her BA in Studio Arts from Wichita State University and in 2012 she graduated with her MFA in Art and Technology from The Ohio State University. Tatiana Larsen completed one-year artist-in-residence at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, UT. She received a number of scholarships and awards, some of which are: Ulrich Museum Alliance Award, Alfred & Ester Penny Scholarship. Larsen has exhibited her work in venues such as Urban Arts Space in Columbus, OH, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Central Utah Art Center in Salt Lake City, UT as well as several alternative gallery spaces and performance venues in Los Angels and Wichita areas. Her videos have screened at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH, Torrance Museum of Art in Torrance, CA and Sam Huston University in Huston, TX. ARTIST STATEMENT Tatiana Svrckova Larsen uses an interdisciplinary approach to link her personal journey of things such as cultural assimilation, spirituality and interpersonal relationships. Her work often explores the “grey area” between two contrasts and the idea of passage from one condition or place to another. Larsen often uses cultural clichés, religious symbolism and images from her personal history.

Michelle Larsen

BIO Michelle Larsen, a recent mother, currently teaches art at South Ogden Junior High and is working toward her MFA through a low-residency program at Lesley University (formerly the Art Institute of Bostin) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “I live in Ogden, which is quickly becoming what I consider to be the coolest town in Utah. I show work at Pandemonium Art Gallery on Historic 25th street in Ogden, which I coincidentally consider to be the coolest art gallery in Utah. Aside from teaching, painting, and studying art, I enjoy thrift shopping, reading 1970’s science fiction, and working on beautifying my little house with my husband.” ARTIST STATEMENT “I work within the genre of still life. I am interested in the cultural and personal connotations and associations that each of us has with objects. My work juxtaposes unrelated objects into repulsive or disconcerting combinations. The purpose is not to shock or disgust the viewer, but to disrupt normalcy in a way that encourages the consideration of the objects, their meanings, and the significance of the combinations. I am interested in how the simple combination and arrangement of objects can elicit a range of responses and questions from the viewer. What is natural, what is unnatural? What is human, what is animal? What is edible, what is inedible? What is attractive, what is repulsive? Ultimately I hope that the consideration of these questions sheds light on our social conventions and cultural beliefs to give us a greater understanding of ourselves and our perceptions of the world.”

Lance Larsen

Poet; Storyteller; UA&M Teaching Artist; Writer

Lance Larsen, who recently finished up a five-year appointment as the poet laureate of Utah, teaches at BYU. He has published four poetry collections, with a fifth, What the Body Knows, forthcoming in 2017. His poetry appears widely in such venues as Georgia Review, Poetry, Gettysburg Review, Southern Review, New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. He has won a number of awards, including a Pushcart Prize and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. In prose he has won the Santa Fe Prize, the Utah Original Writing Competition, and the Writers at Work nonfiction fellowship, and his work has made the notables list in Best American Essays five times. He often collaborates with his wife Jacqui, a visual artist. He has directed five study abroad programs in London and Madrid. He teaches at BYU, where he serves as department chair. Lance regularly teaches poetry, both formal and free verse, as well a short lyrical prose. He also lectures on the habits of crea- tivity. He has worked with writers of all ages and abilities, from first graders to seniors, from non-writers to publishing graduate students. In a pinch he can teach in Spanish. He takes special pleasure in introducing writers to unfamiliar forms and modes, and specializes in fun and innovative writing prompts, including group work. When he isn’t teaching and writing, he hikes, plays pick-up basketball with other frustrated jock types, grows hos- tas, collects antiques, juggles, and occasionally walks on his hands.

I was born and currently live in Salt Lake City. Not all of my life, however, has been spent living in Salt Lake City. I have spent time in Reno, Nevada, northern Utah, and Germany. I graduated from Utah State University with a business and foreign language background. Over the years I have taught myself photography and learned from others. I’ve worked as a travel agent for many years, and due to my work I was invited numerous times to travel industry events held in Italy and Germany.Going to Italy, Germany and several other European countries many times over the past years took my photography interest to a much higher level. I love wandering the narrow streets of European cities and villages. I aim to capture a unique moment, to document the beauty in the things that most people walk by and don’t really notice. I invite you to look for the things that surround you daily and you skip over, take time to stop, to wander, and to enjoy the simple things in life.

Michael Lavers

Michael Lavers is the author of After Earth, published by the University of Tampa Press. His poems have appeared in Crazyhorse, 32 Poems, The Hudson Review, Best New Poets 2015, TriQuarterly, The Georgia Review, and elsewhere. He has been awarded the Chad Walsh Poetry Prize, the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize, and the Michigan Quarterly Review Page Davidson Clayton Prize for Emerging Poets. He has degrees from Brigham Young University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Utah. Together with his wife, the writer and artist Claire Åkebrand, and their two children, he lives in Provo, Utah, and teaches poetry at BYU.

Trijsten Leach

I grew up in the Santa Cruz California countryside and gained an early love of the mountains, the forests and the oceans. When I wasn’t surfing I was hiking, or biking with my brothers and friends. I earned a BFA from Brigham Young University Hawaii. Before then I had never used oil paints and had only once or twice painted a picture. During my time at college I painted no more than 25 paintings but I learned the fundamentals and my interest was ignited. For seven years after graduating my art production halted due to a nine-to-five desk job. After being laid off with nearly 700 other employees my family and I decided I would do art full time, using my front porch as my studio in our Provo Utah home. In April of 2017 I did my first painting on location (en pleinair). In my mind that marked the beginning of my adventure as a full time artist. Through a series of miracles I was able to study under the renowned California Landscape Artist John Burton. That experience did more for my art education than any other instruction and learning I had done previously. Artist Statement My artwork centers on landscapes of the American West, and in particular Utah. Plein-air painting plays a very important role in my work as it informs the subtlety of color and textures within my art. Light and form, as observed in nature, are essential elements in conveying the stories behind the places I paint. Each place has a unique identity and I strive to capture that as simply as possible. It is not enough to paint a pretty picture, it is my intention to help viewers feel the poetry of the landscape, locked in an otherwise fleeting moment of time. My focus for the last year has been on Utah mountainscapes. With no shortage of mountain views I have tried to paint iconic mountains from unique perspectives or hard-to-reach vantage points. This has meant capturing small studies from life and expounding those ideas on larger canvas’ in the studio.

Michael Leavitt

Composer; Director; Musician; Producer

Before moving to Utah, Michael worked throughout the Las Vegas valley as musical director and/or pianist-conductor for many musical theater productions including Brigadoon, Guys and Dolls, Mame, Fame, Cinderella, Oklahoma, Oliver, Anything Goes and many more. He began piano lessons at age 8, with Barbara Lee, then studied with Roger Bushell, Khoren Ouzounian, Dr. Scott Holden, and Dr. Robin Hancock. In his teens, Michael won many competitions including the prestigious Bolognini Piano Competition and the Yamaha High School Piano Competition. In 2003, Michael moved to Utah and became the pianist for BYU’s Young Ambassadors, performing all over the United States, China, Korea, Brazil, Argentina, and Canada. He was also the pianist and band leader for BYU’s production of Smokey Joe’s Café, AIDA, Oklahoma, and the BYU New York Showcase. Michael graduated from BYU in 2008, with a degree in Media Music. Michael’s recent works include: Producer of the American Radio Cafe (americanradiocafe.com); Music and Sound Engineer for the BYU film, Onward Alone, which explores the experiences of the women of the Mormon Battalion, through dance; Co-Producer of A Brand New Year for the LDS Church; and Music Producer for the new BYU film, Berlin, a musical written by Broadway producer Erik Orton. Michael has performed and worked with local artists such as David Zabriskie, Tyler Castleton, Kelly Eisenhour, Alex Boyé, Aaron Ashton, and SPIN.

Guy Lebeda is a writer, poet and journalist who has published essays and articles about art, the environment and outdoor topics. His work has appeared in publications such as Tallahassee Magazine, Capital City, The Running Journal, the University of Wyoming’s Alumnews Magazine, the Laramie Daily Boomerang, Valley Horse Journal, Crossroads Anthology, Salt Lake City Magazine, In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal (Norton), and Land That We Love.

Roland Lee

Visual Artist

Roland Lee has been a practicing artists for over 50 years. Since 1979 He has concentrated on watercolor landscapes of the national parks along with paintings of historic Utah, rural America, and European scenes. His paintings are in over 1800 collections and he was awarded the Governors Mansion medal for contributions to the arts in Utah. Stop by his gallery and studio in the historic arts district of downtown St. George.

David Lee

Mapping Literary Utah; Poet

David Lee has published over two dozen books and his awards include the Western States Book Award, Mountain and Plains States Booksellers Award, Elkhorn Poetry Prize and Utah Book Awards. He was named the First Poet Laureate of Utah and held that position for a six-year term. In 2001 he was Finalist-runner-up for the position of United States Poet Laureate. He has received multiple fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. He has received multiple nominations for the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. Lee held classes at Southern Utah University for thirty two years and chaired the Department of Language, Literature, and Humanities for twenty five of those years. He received every teaching award given by the university, including being named Professor of the Year on three separate occasions. He is an Emeritus Professor of English at that institution. He was the fifth academic in Utah to be named a Lifetime Fellow by the Utah Council of Arts and Sciences and received the Utah Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in both the Arts and Humanities. Retired, Lee splits his time between Boulder, Utah; Mesquite, Nevada; Silver City, Nevada; Seaside, Oregon; the Cascade River, Washington; and Benalmadena, Espana. His most recent book is Mine Tailings published by 5 Sisters Press. He reads, scribbles and wanders available graveled roads and trails, all at about the same rate and pace.

I have enjoyed writing poetry since my eight grade year of school. I love to write about things that almost every person can relate to. I also enjoy taking pictures of nature. It’s all basically a hobby, an outlet if you will. I would however like to share my work with othersl.

Roland Lee

Visual Artist

Roland Lee is nationally known for his transparent watercolors of the southwest landscape, the pioneer west, and rural European scenes. He devotes full-time to painting from his studio located in historic downtown St. George, Utah. A graduate of Brigham Young University, he has exhibited and won awards in over 50 invitational juried shows including the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and Arts for the Parks Top 100. His originals can be found in over 1000 public and private collections throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Roland has been featured in "The Artist’s Magazine" and "Art West" magazine and his paintings have appeared on the covers of the "Ensign" magazine. His work has also been profiled in articles and gallery ads in publications such as "Art West Magazine," "Southwest Art magazine", "Art-Talk magazine", "U.S. Art" and "Art Business News." He is included in the books, "A Century of Sanctuary, The Art of zion National Park", "Contemporary Western Artists" by Peggy and Harold Samuels, "Artists of Utah", by Swanson, and "McKittrick’s Guide to Fine Art."

Jeanette Lee

I have always loved art and the outdoors. I began my studies in art at Rick’s College, now BYU-Idaho, where I received an associate’s in fine art. I then earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marriage, Family, and Human Development from Brigham Young University and then stayed at home with my children when they were small. Now that they are all in school, I have gone back to receive a second bachelor’s degree from Utah Valley University and am currently working on my BFA in illustration. I love painting landscapes and doing figurative work. I love being in the outdoors and spending time with my family.

MaryAnn Lee

Dancer; UA&M Teaching Artist

MaryAnn Lee is the director of the Tanner Dance Program and Chil- dren’s Dance Theatre in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah, where she is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Depart- ment of Modern Dance. She trained with Virginia Tanner and was a member of Children’s Dance Theatre. She received master’s degrees in dance and French from Mills College and the University of Cincin- nati, respectively. She performed professionally with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and Moveable Feast Dance Company in San Francisco and with the Contemporary Dance Theatre in Ohio. Ms. Lee was a dance specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts’ Artists-in-Schools program and taught throughout the United States. She has been an invited guest teacher in China, Japan, The Netherlands, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, England, Finland, Cana- da, and Brazil. Ms. Lee continues to teach at the University of Utah in the Depart- ments of Modern Dance and Education, and in the Tanner Dance Program. She teaches throughout Utah, nationally, and internation- ally. Ms. Lee and Tanner Dance received the Governor’s Award in the Arts. The Utah Dance Education Organization honored Ms. Lee with a Lifetime Achievement Award at their 2012 Spring Con- ference for her tremendous contributions to the world of dance and especially the education of young dancers. In June 2013 Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and the Utah Arts Festival recog- nized Ms. Lee with the Mayor’s Award for her artistic contribu- tions to the community.

Mitchell Lee

Mitchell Lee is a Utah based artist working out of West Valley. Mitchell enrolled in the University of Utah in 2012 as a math student. After taking several art classes, he fell in love with the arts and went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2018 and his Bachelor of Science in 2019. Mitchell has exhibited work in numerous Utah Galleries. Artist Statement Mitchell paints self-portraits on surfaces constructed of found objects. While doing so, he purposefully acknowledges the ideas of immortality and flattery that correspond to traditional portraiture only to challenge them by having them on non-pristine painting surfaces. The found objects that he builds his painting surfaces from are taken from his current suburban environment to represent the influence of his sheltered and reclusive lifestyle. In his work, he makes bare his frustration for his lack of personal significance with his mark making —whether a mark is made with a brush, palette knife, or hatchet. Mitchell often starts a painting with an image of a lone figure and builds around it using collage methods to reference ideas of isolation of disconnection.

Hyunmee Lee

Hyunmee Lee was born in Seoul, Korea, where she grew up practicing Western Modern art with experience in Eastern painting. Lee is recognized for her contemporary paintings executed using her unique process of the “meditative gesture.”Influenced by her strong connection to Asian calligraphy and her upbringing in the Taoist, Buddhist and Confucianist traditions, the Korean-born artist draws from a rich artistic and philosophical heritage. Her style is a playful combination of expressionistic abstraction and minimalist conceptualism, which embraces and balances opposing energies (spontaneity and restraint, completion and process) and draws upon diverse cultural influences. Lee received her BFA in painting from Hongik University, Seoul. She earned MA and MFA degrees from University of Sydney. After returning to South Korea from Sydney, she taught at Hongik University while exhibiting in shows in major art galleries and museums, including the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kong Pyong Art Centers, the MANIF Seoul in the Seoul Art Center and the Sun-Kok Art Museum. In 1997, Lee emigrated to the United States, where she settled in Utah and began teaching painting at Utah Valley University, becoming a tenured professor. In 2009, she retired from teaching to focus on her art career. Lee currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Lee has conducted numerous solo exhibitions across three continents, including in Sydney and Seoul. She has been featured in major solo exhibitions at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum, and her recent works have been exhibited in the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Gallery. In 2015, Lee was honored with the prestigious Fellowship for Visual Arts Excellence from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums. I make portraits of people, place and things of now and around me that are more of the complex of information than the visual appearances of those things. I capture perceivable elements of the moments, such as smell, feelings, circumstances, histories, and maybe trivial matters, into shapes. Influenced by infographics, animations and hieroglyphs, forms are made into symbols or life forms. Then I lay them out into the structure. Through this process, I believe I can make the portraits that are closer to the essence of those existences than the medium like photos and videos can. My pseudo-abstract portraits of people from my memories allow me to project a sense of self and time that I live in, that is ever-changing. – Nov 2012 Jiyoun Lee-Lodge is interested in how her memory forms and changes under the influence of globalizing media of nowadays. (also living in New York definitely blends into ‘the influence’, too.) Jiyoun uses painting, drawing, and printmaking, installations and performances using rubber, silk, foam, metal, and etc. Jiyoun makes quirky yet obsessive abstract works. Aïsha Lehmann

Aïsha Lehmann is an artist based in Provo, Utah. She is currently in Brigham Young University’s Studio Art BFA program, with minors in Sociology and Africana Studies. She is an artist and researcher, grappling with the complexities of identity in race, ethnicity, gender, and spirituality. As she researches, she examines academic studies as well as her own gathered material on others’ personal experiences and narratives. She translates observations into imagery using paper, patterns, drawing, and printmaking techniques.

Christopher Leibow

Christopher Anthony Leibow graduated from Antioch University Los Angeles with an MFA in Poetry, he was nominated for a Pushcart in 2008 and 2010 and a Utah Book Award. He is winner of the Writers@Work Writer’s Advocate Award 2008. He curated Cabaret Voltage a spoken word, art and music show in Salt Lake City for 7 years. He has been active in the arts community and worked with at risk youth. In addtion to local participation, he has been published in Barrow Street, Interim Magazine, Juked and numerous other journals in print and online. He currently lives in Salt Lake City, UT.

Melissa Leilani Larson

Melissa Leilani Larson is a Filipino American playwright and screenwriter whose work has been seen on four continents. Originally from Hau’ula, HI she has called Utah home for 31 years. She has received commissions to create new plays for Plan-B Theatre Company, Creekside Theatre Fest, Utah Valley University, and Brigham Young University. Recent productions include: Kelly Barnhill’s The Girl Who Drank the Moon (commissioned by Utah Valley University), Pilot Program, Rabindranath Tagore’s The Post Office (commissioned by Plan-B Theatre, Gandhi Alliance for Peace, and Granite School District), Bitter Lemon (commissioned by Creekside Theatre Fest), The Edible Complex (commissioned by Plan-B Theatre), Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (commissioned by Brigham Young University), Little Happy Secrets, Martyrs’ Crossing, Persuasion, Lady in Waiting, and the book for Erica Glenn’s musical The Weaver of Raveloe (adapted from George Eliot’s Silas Marner). Feature films include Jane and Emma and Freetown. In 2018, Mel was selected by the Association for Mormon Letters to receive the 2018 Smith-Pettit Foundation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Mormon Letters. She is the only woman to receive more than one Association for Mormon Letters Drama award and is the youngest person to win three. Other honors include: the Ghana Movie Award for Best Screenplay; the IRAM Best New Play award; two Salt Lake City Weekly Best of Utah Arts Awards; the Mayhew Playwriting Award; winning the Lewis National Playwriting Contest for Women; placing as a Trustus Playwrights Festival top five finalist; and being named an O’Neill National Playwrights Conference semi-finalist. Mel is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America, serving as the Utah Regional Rep. She is also a member of The Lab, Plan-B Theatre’s incubator for new plays, and was a 2018 Art Access Mentor. She holds a BA in English from BYU and an MFA from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop.

Diana Levi

A graduate of fine arts, as well as self taught. The collective works I have to my credit are one woman shows, gallery showings, public art, private collections and fine art museums. Including numerous awards, [lists available upon request]. My experience has been with silk painting, watercolor, pen, graphite, color pencil, acrylic, and oils. I have been a serious artist since the age of two, although not proficient at that time, I knew it was my destiny. The many occasions I would sculpt or paint until the early hours of the morning. My father would find me lying limp by my artwork…wake me, scold me for my nocturnal endeavors, knowing he would repeat this ritual, as I would be there again. Although, financial stability may elude an artist the passion nevertheless is priceless. Art feeds my soul. Everything in life we experience becomes the journey that shapes our perceptions, and our creations, just as those whom interpret our art. I am endlessly searching for artistic endeavors that satisfy my curiosity and allows me to express my technique. By incorporating textures, bold colors, and lines, and blend into a composition, which many works have been created by accident, are by far my most successful. For me, visual art is a mystery to the eye, which encourages the viewer to be drawn into the composition. The challenge for me is to combine these forms that are immediately recognizable, yet a distortion of shapes that transcend into more than one subject. An ultimately to convey an emotion that the viewer will identify with and in them find a revelation, inspiration, or amusement. Visual art nourishes and enriches our lives, and enlightens our surroundings with personality and ambience. My hope is to enrich your environment with my creations. To find something in my work you can connect with. I am inspired by the many masters whom enrich our lives with ‘original’ art. I create original art to satisfy my search….and hope others enjoy my work and the journey with me.

Dilan Li

Dilan Li finished her BFA in painting and drawing at the University of Utah in 2018. Since then, the main focus of her work has been identity exploration of herself as well as the two cultures she grew up in. She mainly works on paper and uses ink, pastel, watercolor, etc. Artist Statement “In this piece is the Chinese character “我” (pronounced “wuo”) which means “I” or “myself.” The piece is done in a style similar to a work of traditional chinese calligraphy, but I left out certain marks in the character and made it look almost illegible. The piece is about my effort in seeking identity growing up in the very different Eastern and Western culture.”

Kheng Lim

Hi, I’m Kheng Lim. In 2013, I arrived in Provo, Utah to pursue a master’s degree in fine art from Brigham Young University. I was excited to travel halfway across the world to a place I barely knew anyone, to pursue my passion for creating beautiful art. And the moment I settled into the studio I launched into painting, sometimes deep into the night, when during the walk home the only other pedestrians on the quiet streets on campus were the deer that had come out to forage. With all the paintings I had made came the question: how I am going to frame all my paintings to show? I was a poor student and couldn’t afford professional service. So, I had to improvise. I learned to mill raw lumber, cut and assemble frames, and to put a final finish on them. I realized that frame-making was fun! Over time, I began examining the paintings at galleries and museums, noticing the frames around them, and imagining other framing styles that would look good with the artwork. After school, I took up woodworking jobs to hone my wood crafting skills. A couple of years later I managed a custom frame shop, and that gave an understanding of operating a framing business. Life has its own mind with its turns, and when the opportunity arose to start my own framing studio, I immediately took it. Through the years I have gained knowledge in frame-making, an understanding of fine-art preservation, and the experience of operating a custom-frame shop. To put all these different aspects of my learning into enhancing and preserving your family heirlooms has become a mission and a passion of mine. This is work that I still gladly work deep into the night for. The greatest satisfaction in my job is to see the expressions of excitement and joy my clients show when they see how beautiful their memories turns out. It feels like the unveiling of a new car! Ron Linn

Ron Linn is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Portland, OR, whose work is primarily based in drawing. He received his MFA from the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. He has participated in several residencies, including Signal Fire, an artist and activist organization based in Portland, aiming to introduce artists into wilderness spaces, as well as the NES artist residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. His work has been shown at Carnation Contemporary, Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, the Rio and Alice Galleries in Salt Lake City, Bountiful Davis Art Center, and PDX Contemporary Art. He currently teaches painting and drawing courses at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he lives and works, and where he is a founding member of the PARC artist collective. Artist Statement John Berger writes that a drawing is never simply of an object, but of an object being looked at. Drawing is at its root an act of translation that seeks to transform something as fleeting as what we see into a fixed image on a tangible surface. And, like most translations, it almost always comes short. Lately I have been obsessively drawing stones that I find on my walks, trying to read the messages written in their surfaces as I trace their contours on paper. I am interested in how stones might speak signs, becoming maps, or diagrams, or even records of their own histories. I like to think of these stones as a sort of record of deep time along with their ephemeral interactions with our species. It is endlessly perplexing to me that the forces through which a stone begins its life deep within the earth might eventually connect it with myself. Each specific mark builds on the next to create an image, in much the same way that we gather a series of fleeting images and perceptions in order to create a picture of the world, or in the way a stone itself is shaped by ephemeral touch and time over millennia.

Lynne Listing-Larson

Lynne Larson received a BFA in Dance from Western Michigan University and a MFA in Dance from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She danced profession- ally with Martita Goshen’s Earthworks, Repertory Dance Theatre, SBDance and Koester & Dancers. In 2007, she was named Education Director for Reperto- ry Dance Theatre, and in 2014, Artistic Associate as well. She coordinates all arts-in-education activities for RDT, directs RDT’s annual Summerdance and Winter- dance Workshops, High School and Young Dancer Sum- mer Workshops, rehearsal directs numerous pieces in the RDT repertory including the Michio Ito repertory and assists in artistic long range planning for the company. Lynne is an accomplished teacher of students K- professional in modern dance. Lynne works with the Utah Board of Education’s Physical Education Depart- ment for their annual PLS State Conference. She also taught the U of U’s Teaching Methods Class for the Mod- ern Dance Department. She also teaches at The Dailey Method Barre Studio.

Llajtayku means "our pueblo" in the Quechua language (pronounced ‘yock-TIE-ku’). We play folkloric dance music of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador, sung in Quechua and Spanish. We play string instruments (guitar & charango), percussion (cajon & bombo), and winds (kena, zampona, tarkas). Our repertoire includes original tunes and classics by Los Kjarkas, Los Jairas, Illapu,and Mercedes Sosa; our variety extends beyond altiplano music to Afro-Peruvian landos, vals criollo, Venezuelan joropo and Afro-Bolivian saya. I have a BFA from the University of Utah. I have taught for over 20 years in the public school system. 14 years ago I started the Riverton Arts Festival which promotes new upcoming artist and their work. To create an atmosphere that invites creative interaction between artists and their patrons. To provoke deeper thought and a better understanding of art and the importance it plays in our lives. I am currently a partner at Club Mud a full functioning pottery studio. We offer pottery, hand built, wheel thrown and stained glass classes to adults. We hold open studio time and have fun introductory projects for all ages as a well as childrens summer classes.
