A Master’s Recital with Matthew Robertson, conducting
The Choral Arts Society of Utah, Sterling Poulson, Music Director, is partnering with the University of Utah’s College of Fine Arts Choral Studies, under the direction of Dr. Barlow Bradford, the Ellen Neilson Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair for Choral Studies, giving graduate students the opportunity to work with our 100-voice choir in the preparation and presentation of required choral recitals.
This year’s spring concert features a recital prepared by graduate student Matthew Robertson, currently working on his Masters Degree in Choral Conducting. The concert highlights the Mass in G Major by Franz Schubert, as well as selected works by Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. The concert will be performed in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square, April 11, 2015 at 7:30pm.
Matthew Robertson is a pianist, double-bassist, vocalist, and conductor. He studied piano performance at the University of Utah with Gladys Gladstone, and double-bass with David Yavornitsky and Corbin Johnston. Matt was one of the featured soloists on the inaugural release of the BYU Tantara label's "Legacy" series, where he recorded piano etudes written by his grandfather, Utah composer Leroy Robertson. He was also a bassist in the Orchestra at Temple Square for many years, performing and recording frequently with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He has taught music for over 25 years, and is an active member of the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Utah Music Teachers' Association. Matt is currently completing a Master's Degree in choral conducting at the University of Utah with Dr. Barlow Bradford, and studies voice with Dr. David Power. Matt serves as an Assistant Conductor for the University's A Cappella Choir and Chamber Choir, and is also an Assistant Conductor for the Utah Symphony Chorus. Upon completion of his graduate studies, he plans to become a choir teacher. Matt has been married to Heather Thomas Robertson for twenty years, and they are the parents of three children.
Members of the Choral Arts Society of Utah volunteer their time and talents to provide quality performances, many of which benefit schools and organizations providing humanitarian services to the local area. We wish to thank the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, one of our major sponsors for this event.
